27 Students Rewarded with Education Incentive for STPM Excellence in Sibu
SIBU – A total of 27 students were rewarded with education incentive today for their excellent performance in the 2024 Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) examinations. The recognition came from Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, who has been championing academic achievement among students in his constituency.
The incentive awards ceremony, held at the SMK Methodist hall, celebrated the students’ hard work and determination. Chieng presented a total of RM9,200 in financial incentives to the high-achieving students of SMK Methodist, continuing a tradition he started four years ago. Students from SMK Sacred Heart were also included under this initiative in previous years.
Speaking at the event, Chieng emphasized that rewarding academic excellence helps nurture personal growth and strengthens the community. “This year, we’ve improved the incentive structure to better reflect academic levels,” he said.
The revised education incentive scheme is as follows:
“I hope these incentives, though modest, inspire you to keep pushing forward; not just in academics, but in life,” Chieng added, addressing the students.
He also shared updates on the Sarawak government’s RM1,200 yearly financial aid for Sarawakian students enrolled in public and private higher education institutions. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of tertiary education and will be distributed through S Pay Global. Eligible students are encouraged to apply via the official Yayasan Sarawak website.
Importantly, this assistance is separate from the upcoming Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), which is set to begin in 2026.
“I want all of you to continue aiming high and one day return to contribute your talents to Sibu and Sarawak,” said Chieng, reinforcing the importance of giving back to the community.
Also present at the event were John Ting Sik Kang, Chairman of the SMK Methodist Board of Management; Ting Wei Ping, Parent-Teacher Association President; and William Yong, SMK Methodist senior assistant.
The event not only recognized achievement but also reinforced the value of education in building a stronger future for Sarawak.
